How to Support Your Body’s Recovery: The 3 Ts of Healing
When you’re recovering from back pain, neck pain or an injury, it’s natural to focus on the area that hurts. But recovery is rarely influenced by just one thing.
How you move, sleep, manage stress, eat and hydrate can all affect how you feel and recover.
At Chislehurst Chiropractic Clinic, one simple framework we use to look at the bigger picture is the 3 Ts: Thoughts, Traumas and Toxins — three different forms of stress that your body has to adapt to.
1. Thoughts: Stress, Sleep and Recovery
The first T is Thoughts: the mental and emotional stresses we experience.
Work pressure, family responsibilities, anxiety and poor sleep can influence us physically, contributing to muscle tension, poorer recovery and changes in how we experience pain.
Helpful habits include:
• Prioritising consistent, good-quality sleep
• Taking breaks during stressful working days
• Using relaxation, breathing or meditation techniques
• Exercising and getting outdoors regularly
You don’t need to eliminate stress completely. The aim is to give your body regular opportunities to recover from it.
2. Traumas: Injuries, Posture and Physical Stress
Trauma doesn’t have to mean a major accident or sporting injury. Physical stress can also build gradually.
Sitting at a desk, looking down at a phone, lifting children, repetitive work and staying in the same position for long periods can all place demands on muscles and joints.
Rather than trying to maintain a “perfect” posture all day, aim to move and change
position regularly.
Try:
• Taking regular movement breaks
• Positioning screens to reduce prolonged looking down
• Alternating sides when carrying bags or children
• Including walking, mobility and appropriate strengthening in your week
Where Does Chiropractic Care Fit In?
Chiropractic care focuses primarily on the musculoskeletal system, particularly the spine, joints and their relationship with movement and function.
Previous injuries, repetitive strain and inactivity can contribute to stiffness, restricted movement or discomfort. A chiropractor can assess how you move, identify areas that may not be functioning as well as they could and, where appropriate, use chiropractic adjustments, mobilisation, exercise and lifestyle advice to help improve movement and function.
What you do between appointments matters too. Movement, exercise, sleep and everyday habits can all form an important part of recovery.

3. Toxins: Hydration, Nutrition and Lifestyle
The third T is Toxins.
Rather than thinking about “detoxing”, think about the everyday things your body needs to function well, including good hydration and nutrition alongside lifestyle factors such as alcohol and smoking.
Hydration and Recovery
Water is involved in many normal processes throughout the body, including circulation, temperature regulation and transporting nutrients.
Simple habits include:
• Drinking regularly throughout the day
• Increasing fluids around exercise and in hot weather
• Keeping water accessible while working
• Combining good hydration with a balanced diet
Hydration isn’t a treatment for pain or injury, but it is part of supporting normal healthy function.
Looking at the Whole Picture

A common mistake when dealing with recurring pain or slow recovery is searching for one cause and one solution.
In reality, several factors may be contributing. You might be treating your back while still sitting for ten hours a day, sleeping poorly and experiencing significant stress.
The 3 Ts provide a useful way to look at the bigger picture:
Addressing several contributing factors together may provide a better foundation for recovery than focusing on one area alone.
Struggling With Pain, Stiffness or Slow Recovery?
If pain or stiffness keeps returning, it may be worth looking at what could be contributing rather than simply managing the symptoms each time.
At Chislehurst Chiropractic Clinic in Chislehurst, our chiropractors assess your movement, spinal and joint function, lifestyle and history to help understand what may be contributing to your problem.
Where chiropractic care is appropriate, we’ll explain what we’ve found and discuss a treatment and management plan designed around you.
