Management of the symptoms of Arthritis
Arthritis or wear and tear is a normal process of ageing. It can also be caused by repetitive excessive use of joints in an occupation, poor posture or after an injury.
All the surfaces of your joints are covered by a layer of cartilage and this can be worn down over time.
Similar to tooth decay, degeneration of your joints begins without your knowing, and it occurs slowly to all of us. The general wear and tear of a lifetime results in joints laying down extra areas of bone in an attempt to support the damaged area. Generally our bodies compensate for this, and we feel little or no pain – even if the wear an tear is quite advanced. However, slight loss of proper joint movement in a worn joint may cause nerve irritation and inflammation which could lead to pain.
It is not possible to take away any damage that has been caused by wear and tear, but Chiropractic can help you reduce the stiffness in your joints and reduce the muscle spasm and pains often associated with it. If you are in pain it is not always as a result of wear and tear. Your Chiropractor will help advise you on this and also where possible suggest ways to help slow down this process, through postural exercises, ergonomic and dietary advice.
