Understanding Sciatica
Sciatica is a common condition experienced when the sciatic nerve is irritated or compressed. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in your body. It runs from your lower pelvis, through the buttocks and down to your feet.
If you suffer from sciatica, you may feel pain, numbness or tingling that ranges from mild through to severe. The pain can start in your lower back or buttocks before continuing down one of your legs. It is also possible to get a ‘give way’ weakness in the leg. It’s quite common that patients with low back and leg pain come to us because they’re in pain and need help.
Sciatica can be caused by many different things. It can be often due to an accumulation of stressors, such as posture, lifting, emotional stress, trauma and osteoarthritis.
As with any trapped or irritated nerve, sciatica and its associated pain makes mobility a daily struggle. Some people experience muscle weakness in the affected leg which exacerbates the problem. Once we understand the cause of your problem, Chiropractic can be a very effective way to relieve the pain and release pressure on the nerve and get to the root of the problem.
