At Chislehurst Chiropractic, we see patients with a variety of conditions. Unfortunately, many of these conditions aren’t as commonly discussed within mainstream discourse – meaning that many people are less aware of them, even to the point of not believing in them. One of these conditions is Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Our goal is to push this discussion out of the shadows and help more people who are suffering from SAD.
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a form of depression that is offset by changing seasons. It usually occurs during the winter, when daylight hours become shorter and the weather becomes colder. This is why SAD is often referred to as winter depression, or the winter blues.
What causes SAD?
There is no definitive reason as to what causes SAD, but many experts and specialists believe it is due to lack of natural light or sunlight and cold weather and nutritional deficiencies. The combination of these factors may affect your “biological clock,” (your natural indicator of when to sleep and wake up) and serotonin production (the chemical in your brain that affects mood).
What are the Symptoms of SAD?
- Feeling sad, grumpy or moody
- Having episodes of anxiety and depression
- Trouble concentrating or focusing
- Low energy levels
- Experiencing diet changes (craving more carbohydrates)
- Weight gain
- Postural changes
- Problems sleeping or feeling tired, even if you’ve already had adequate sleep
If you recognize that these symptoms start to occur around the same time each year, starting in September or October and last until April or May, then you may have SAD. The symptoms of SAD will often mimic other types of depression, so it’s important to visit your doctor to receive a health assessment.
One method to cope with and manage SAD is to receive chiropractic care. Sad is often the result of emotional, physical and mental stress, which can be triggered by misalignments in the spine. The spine and the brain is where the body houses the central nervous system – this is how the brain is able to communicate to the rest of your body. If the spinal joints are not aligned correctly, the body’s communication with the brain is less effective. This staggers body function and overall body wellness.
