‘Tis the season of joy, laughter….and possibly back pain? It’s that magical time of year when we deck the halls, wrap gifts, and let’s be honest, bend, lift, and twist our bodies in ways that Santa would never approve of. So before you lift that oversized box of Christmas decorations or embark on a marathon mince pie baking session, we’ve got a few festive tips (and a sprinkle of humour) to keep your spine happy and the festive season jolly.
1. Lifting Santa’s Sack (or Your Decorations) with Care
We all know Santa has his elves to help him out, but for us mere mortals, lifting those heavy boxes of decorations or even the turkey for 10 can turn us into holiday Scrooges with back pain faster than you can say “Jingle Bells.” Remember, lift with your legs, not your back! Bend your knees, keep the box close to your body, and avoid twisting like you’re performing a Christmas dance move. The only thing you should be cracking this holiday season is a joke, not your back!
2. Christmas Shopping – The Sport of Champions!
Let’s face it, Christmas shopping can feel like an Olympic event. Pushing through crowds, carrying heavy bags, and standing in line for hours can really cause problems for your spine. Be sure to wear supportive shoes (yes, this is my not-so-subtle plea to avoid heels!), switch bags between hands, and take breaks to stretch. It’s perfectly acceptable to take a break for a cinnamon latte or mulled wine. After all, those shopping bags aren’t going to carry themselves so take your time and get it done with minimal affect on your back.
3. The Christmas Tree Tango
Decorating the Christmas tree is a beloved tradition, but it can also be a bit of a back-breaking dance. Reaching for that star at the top? Think twice before you channel your inner ballerina and stretch beyond your limit. Instead, use a step ladder to reach high branches and avoid twisting your torso while you string up the lights. Your spine will thank you, and you’ll avoid any accidental “Fa-la-la-la-flops” off the ladder.
4. The Office Party Plank
Many of us spend the festive season working hard at the office before the big break, which often means sitting at a desk for long hours. Before you dive into office Christmas tipples take a moment to check your posture. Keep your feet flat on the ground, sit up straight, and take regular breaks to stand up and stretch. You can even impress your coworkers with a quick plank challenge— consider it a warm-up before the Christmas fun commences!
5. Keep Calm and Stay Adjusted
The festive period is a time for joy, but it can also be stressful. Stress often manifests in our bodies as muscle tension, especially in the neck and back. This season, give yourself the gift of self-care. Whether it’s booking a chiropractic adjustment (my personal favourite!) or taking time for a relaxing walk, remember to prioritise your health. A happy spine means a happier you, and who doesn’t want that during the most wonderful time of the year?
6. The Most Wonderful Time for an Adjustment
The end of the year is the perfect time for a little spinal check-up. After all the holiday hustle and bustle, your body could probably use a little TLC. So as you sip your eggnog, hang your stockings, and unwrap your gifts this year, remember to take care of yourself, too. Your spine has supported you all year long and it deserves a little love this festive season.
Remember, a healthy spine is a gift that keeps on giving, and we are here to help you stay aligned and feeling fine. So from us to you, we wish you a very merry Christmas filled with laughter, love, and lumbar health.
Stay well-adjusted and have a magical holiday season!
Why not make an appointment for a check-up before you head into the New Year? It’s a great way to start 2025!
