ValenSPINE’s – it’s time to make the connection!
Valentine’s Day is all about connections – the connection between two people in love, our connection to special occasions through fables such as Cupid and, here at the clinic, the connections between your spine, your nervous system, your pain or discomfort and your wellbeing. That’s why we call it ‘ValenSPINES Day!!‘
Your spine is an incredible structure which connects to every part of your body – organs, muscles, joints, connective tissue and your brain – all via your nervous system.
Giving really is receiving – looking after your spine will benefit all of your body systems, which in turn gives you more capacity to give more of yourself to the things that you love. Of course, you could give your loved one the Valentine’s gift of wellbeing in the form of a voucher for some chiropractic care.
Your Posture & Health
If two bones in your back aren’t sitting nicely in alignment, it’s not always just backache that you could experience. Research has shown that there is a connection between your posture and your health including problems with breathing and poor digestion.
The best prevention of spine and nerve problems is to keep up mobility. Of course, chiropractic adjustments can realign your spine to reduce pressure on the nerves, however our day to day movement is vital.
Your spine can move in four ways – twisting, bending forwards and backwards, and bending from side to side. Depending on what your day-to-day life involves, different exercises will be suitable. If your day includes a lot of physical work such as lifting, the pressures on your spine will be different to someone who sits all day.
Your chiropractor will know your spine well, so ask us for the movements and stretches which would be the most beneficial for you. We have plenty of videos that we can share with you and there’s a vast amount of free classes that can help with rehab, fitness, flexibility, muscle-building and more through Chislehurst Chiropractic Clinic’s Gro programme.
Keeping Mobile
Your spine has curves in it for a reason – they form a springy shape which helps with shock absorption from your movements, and the constant downward pressure of gravity. As long as the mechanics are sound, your spine bounces back into its natural shape with every movement. If anything disrupts the alignment, gravity can make the situation worse. Incorrect distribution of pressure or weight can cause wear and tear on the bones, which can lead to pain and other possible health challenges including osteoarthritis.
It makes sense to correct misalignments at an early stage to avoid complications. Rest assured though, even if you’ve had long-term pain, we can still help. We have seen people who have been in pain for years and made great recoveries after treatment – check out the success stories on our website.
Keeping mobile doesn’t have to be a full-on exercise programme, it can be simply walking more, or doing some gentle stretches and sequences which take you through your body’s own particular range of motion. You can find all this on Gro. If you haven’t signed in to see just how much great content there is simply speak to your chiropractor and lets get you started with it.
Dr Roger Sperry, who won the Nobel Prize for his discoveries in brain research, found that 90% of the stimulation and nutrition to the brain is generated by movement of the spine.
Maintaining Good Connections
As you may know, we are all about a well functioning nervous system here.
When you’re chatting to someone on the phone and the signal drops, you can’t understand what they’re trying to tell you because you’re only hearing one word in three. It’s the same if something structural is disrupting the communication between your nerves and your brain. A faulty connection means problems arise. Not just pain or discomfort, but your brain’s ability to function optimally.
Keeping your spine aligned means you’ll be sharper, feel better, enjoy having more energy and clarity of thought.
Maintaining an effective internal communication system also helps you to become aware of the early signals your body gives you about places where it needs support to function properly.
Symptoms are our body’s way of trying to tell us what is going on. If you don’t listen to early signs, your body is likely to turn up the volume until it’s heard, and more extreme symptoms can be the result.
As it’s ValenSPINES’s’ Day soon, why not think about your loved ones. Would they benefit from a health check to see how chiropractic can help them? Maybe you could show them you care about their health and wellness by gifting them a voucher for a chiropractic consultation or if you think they need to relax, maybe a massage with one of our excellent therapists who work closely alongside our chiropractors.
While Valentine’s Day is an opportunity to make some romantic gestures to show your loved ones how much you appreciate them, ValenSPINE’s Day reminds you to care for your spine, in appreciation of its frankly miraculous contribution to your life!
