Motherly Love

Share your love with mums and mums-to-be

This is the month of Mother’s Day – which is the perfect opportunity to appreciate that all mums need some support at times.

We can often run around looking after the house, kids, the dog and a million other everyday priorities and forget to prioritise ourselves. So whether this is you or you know other mums or mums to-be who need some TLC, we are here to support.

Mums to-be

There is literally no better time to receive some motherly support than when you are pregnant. This is the time to establish the habit and discipline of self-care, because it will be so much more challenging when baby arrives.

Any mum-to-be will appreciate extra help (although that doesn’t mean they will ask for it, helpers have to be proactive). As the spark of a new life becomes a bundle of cells that grow into a fully formed human being, all kinds of changes occur, which affect the pressures, tensions and alignment in mum’s body.

Little strains and misalignments can become pains and problems. Just because these things are common doesn’t mean they’re normal. There are plenty of things you can do to make the whole pregnancy experience more comfortable.

Research shows that there is a relationship between good pelvic alignment, easier births and shorter labour time.

Many pregnant women nowadays often have office jobs where they are sitting down at a desk a lot of the day. This prolonged sitting creates more tension and pressure in the spine that is reduced when women are more mobile and doing less sedentary jobs.

Keeping mobile and doing activities away from the desk can be a great way of keeping the low back nicely relaxed and loose. Don’t underestimate the benefits of a gentle walk! So If you’re already into an exercise routine, keep it up.

Most standard forms of exercise or classes are fine during a normal pregnancy as long as you don’t overdo it – listen to your body, and respect what it says. Of course, get the go-ahead from your healthcare practitioner first.

Depending what you’re into, modifications may need to be introduced as your bump gets bigger and becomes heavier. You can discuss this with your chiropractor. There are also exercises that you can do during pregnancy to keep your body in optimal condition and greatly increase the likelihood of baby engaging in an ideal head-down position. You can learn these, and much more, in one of our Spinning Babies workshops.

If baby is in a breech position, it’s possible even late in pregnancy to influence the baby turning into a head down position.

Chiropractic adjustments can result in a more comfortable, straightforward pregnancy, and positively influence the birth and postpartum recovery.

Adjustments can restore the alignment in the pelvis, which helps prevent tension in the muscles and pressure on the joints. The uterus is a muscle, so just keeping everything nice and relaxed allows mum to feel comfortable, and allows much more room for baby to move and grow, which is important for neurological development.

So this Mother’s Day, you could either treat yourself or someone you know to some chiropractic care or a Spinning Babies workshop.

Motherhood

It’s common to have a lot going on when you are a mum, that’s why we encourage mums to do their best to make quality time for themselves whenever they can.

When you are always on the go, looking after everything and everyone from your parents to the family cat, your body gets fatigued, you can be prone to being stiffer and hold more tension and stress in your system. Over time, this can lead to tight muscles pulling joints out of alignment, resulting in pain or injury.

Coming in for an adjustment can help ease some of this built up tension. The less pain or tension you feel, the easier it is for you to do the important things in life.

Adjustments allow your nervous system and body to work on a better level, allowing you to maintain your loving, giving, productive lifestyle while still feeling great.

You can take this to another level by adding a therapeutic massage to really zone out and relax – our massage therapists work closely with our chiropractors so the two sessions complement each other.

If you have a mother figure in your life who’s always caring for others and not so great at taking time for themselves, send them to us with a voucher. We’ll take good care of them. And if they don’t think they’ve earned it, you’ll be showing them that they deserve it.

Self-help exercise for mums and mums-to be

This simple stretch mobilises the lumbar spine, which can take a lot of strain from a lot of sitting especially during pregnancy, through to the thoracic spine.

“I couldn’t recommend this clinic more. From myself to my children, to my family members, we all use them! Incredible adjustments, advice, atmosphere! Suffering from long term injuries myself, this place helps me to get up and walk on a day to day basis.”
