October Newsletter – Rugby Edition

Whether an amateur sports enthusiast or a top-flight professional, your body is prone to the same kinds of injuries. By its nature, rugby can cause or exacerbate injuries, however injury is not the only problem for sports men and women.

Many find that they reach a ‘threshold’ of ability and cannot improve further however hard they work and however much training they put in. This is why so many serious sports people consult with chiropractors who work to improve both function and health. Ignoring the pain and carrying on with your sport can lead to a chronic injury, especially if it’s left a long time. Pain is a warning sign – do not ignore it!

Poor technique, inadequate pre and post match stretching are the main causes – if muscles are not prepared by a good stretching routine, this can lead to a lack of flexibility and injury.

One player Dr Gould has worked with incurred a serious injury playing rugby

I had to have surgery to remove part of my C5-6 vertebrae and the whole of my C5-C6 disc. Jason’s background and knowledge has meant that I received prompt treatment and subsequently an extensive training and rehabilitation program that has resulted in a full recovery and I am now pain free.’

If you have tight muscles, learn to stretch them out properly by consulting a professional

Get fit to improve your game and if you have had an injury seek help to accelerate recovery

With an acute injury, use ice rather than heat

Try to eat complex carbohydrates (wholemeal pasta for example) about 1 hour before you play to increase your energy

Make sure you warm up and cool down

Drink plenty of water and isotonic drinks to avoid dehydration

Always ask for professional advice if you are not sure what exercises are right for you

Pain is a warning sign – do not ignore it!

What is chiropractic and how can it help?

Chiropractors treat problems with the joints, bones and muscles and the effects they have on the nervous system. Working on all the joints of the body, concentrating particularly on the spine, they use their hands to make gentle, specific adjustments to improve the efficiency of the nervous system and release the body’s natural healing ability.

This can increase your muscle strength, control and co-ordination.

Chiropractic does not involve the use of any drugs or surgery and unlike painkilling drugs, treats the cause of pain, not just the pain itself.

Dr Jason Gould of Chislehurst Chiropractic Clinic can help you to address pain or other symptoms caused by injuries, or simply help you reach peak performance.
