A History of Chiropractic Care and the Olympic Games

We look after many amateur and professional athletes from multiple disciplines, some come in for help with recovery from injury and others to get a competitive advantage.

With the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio well under way, we thought it would be relevant to talk about Olympians and their experience with Chiropractic Care. Olympians of every sport have vouched and sworn by various treatments that have helped them perform, but one practice that remains consistently successful amongst athletes is Chiropractic Care.

Let’s take a look throughout the years to see how Chiropractors have helped Olympic athletes perform and even bring medals home.

  • Great Britain’s cyclist Bradley Wiggins is currently one of Britain’s greatest Olympic medalists, with seven medals under his belt, and four of them gold. Wiggins says his athletic performance has improved since starting regular Chiropractic treatment, and that it remains an integral part of his medical support. He competed in the 2004, 2008, 2012 and (just recently!) 2016 Olympic games.
  • Jamaica’s legendary runner, Usain Bolt will be performing throughout this week in Rio for sprinting. He is regarded as the world’s fastest man. With numerous medals and achievements tied to his name, Bolt turns to Chiropractic treatment to remain in top shape. He is also one of many individuals living with scoliosis, which he claims is helped with Chiropractic treatment.
  • Canada’s Donovan Bailey held the world record for the 100 meters race following his gold medal performance during the 1996 Summer Olympic Games. Bailey has stated that he wouldn’t be an Olympic champion if he did not have Dr. Mark Lindsay, his personal Chiropractor, by his side.
  • USA’s Sheila Taormina competed in four Olympic games throughout her swimming career. She earned a gold medal as a member of the women’s 4×200-meter freestyle relay in 1996. At the end of the 1996 games, she left her Chiropractor this note: “Dr. Steve — Thank you so much for helping me get ready for my race. You are the reason why I’m going home with a gold medal and American record. I seriously don’t think I could have performed to my best without your help.”
  • USA’s Nathan Adrian is a four-time Olympic gold medalist in swimming. He made his Olympic debut in the 2008 games, and has already snagged the gold medal in the 4×100 meter freestyle relay with the men’s US team in Rio. To overcome shoulder and back tension, Adrian turns to Chiropractic treatment to help him perform better.

Regardless of which sport they play, athletes of every shape and size have attributed much of their success to Chiropractic Care. It’s not about only treating one particular case, but about improving full body wellness. These are only five cases out of the thousands of athletes that compete each year. Least to say, Chiropractic Care will remain an integral part of athletic performance for
