Already Lost Sight of Your New Year’s Resolution? Try Setting Goals Instead!
We are already a month into 2017 and some of us lucky individuals are staying strong with our new year’s resolutions. However, there is a handful of us who may have already fallen to the wayside. However, don’t be discouraged! Just because the resolution has taken a detour, it doesn’t mean you can’t get back on track.
The key to getting back on track may be as simple as repositioning the resolution at hand. Here are a few key steps on changing your resolutions into goals for better success and a happier new year:
Step 1: Don’t say “Resolution,” say “Goals”
When setting a new year’s resolution, most people aim to “resolve” a problem. Resolving means that you aim to fix something rather than achieve something. But why not achieve instead? Tell yourself that you’re setting goals as opposed to fixing problems.
Step 2: Set Specific Goals
So you have your goal in mind, but an obstacle that many encounter is the weight and gravity of the challenge. Too many people set goals that are too big and too broad. It’s more challenging to “to be healthier” than “to drink 8 glasses of water every day this week.”
Specific goals are more obtainable and achievable because there is a direct path to take. You won’t get lost with a goal like “drinking 8 glasses of water a day” because it is a specific action. However, “being healthier” can mean a wide variety of actions.
Step 3: Make the Goal Measurable
You should be able to feel the psychological and emotional benefit of achieving your goal. This means that you should feel progress rather than feeling stagnant in your journey. Add numbers to your goal, such as “I’m going to yoga class twice this week” or “I will smoke one less cigarette today.” You can also aim for a shorter time frame to achieve your goal, perhaps a couple days, a week, or even a month. From there, you can follow-up with amended goals for longer and greater progress.
At Chislehurst Chiropractic Clinic, it is our goal to help others achieve their goals. If you are aiming to attend regular yoga, Pilates, meditation, Tai Chi or qigong classes, then we can help you. We can also assist you in achieving other goals as well, such as weight loss or to quit smoking.
