Safe and effective ways to manage migraine and headaches

May 13, 2021 by Chislehurst Chiropractic Clinic

Migraine and headaches can be debilitating, impacting your life and causing disruption, pain and distress. Earlier this month, Jason Gould at Chislehurst Chiropractic ran an online talk focusing on help and advice for anyone suffering from migraine.

According to the World Health Organisation, nearly one billion people worldwide suffer from migraines and three quarters of those are women. It doesn’t just affect adults, 10% of school-age children have migraines and there is a hereditary link with 80-90% of migraine sufferers having at least one family member who also suffers from them.

Symptoms of migraine include flashing lights or disturbance in vision (aura), numbness in the face and arms, nausea, vomiting and severe headache. These symptoms can come on rapidly and last for 24 hours or sometimes several days.

Some triggers for people who suffer from migraines include:

  • Food and drink such as cheese, chocolate or wine
  • Stress and lack of sleep
  • Environmental factors such as smoking or pollution
  • Computer screens / phones
  • Neck related headaches

Migraine can also come from sudden events such as a car accident or whiplash injury.

Finding your triggers

For many sufferers, tackling migraines and severe headaches is about understanding what triggers them and doing what you can to avoid or eliminate them. Keeping a log of when you have symptoms and what you had eaten or drunk, what you were feeling and how much stress you were under at the time can help you understand what your specific triggers are.

Trigger points around the head or neck can be released by chiropractic adjustment to release tension or pressure in the muscles.

Another cause for migraines is tight muscles around the body that impact the nervous system. If your body is tight, it can affect your central nervous system which controls everything in your body. Chiropractic treatment aims to release tension across your whole body and improve communication of the nervous system to alleviate tight muscles and joints.

Getting to the root cause

Painkillers can provide temporary relief but it doesn’t deal with the root cause of migraine or headache. They can also cause side effects and aren’t a preferred long term solution for most people.

Chiropractic can help you address the root cause of migraine and severe headaches. We often see in clinical practice patients with dysfunction of the neck, joint restrictions and muscle imbalances improve and reduce the frequency and severity of headaches and migraines with a combined approach of chiropractic treatment and lifestyle advice.
